The group first came together when Kat, Max and Headnodic met each other and began jamming at a music school in Boston. One thing ledto another, and they met Raashan who convinced them to come to Oakland, CA. The group not only hasan incredible sound, but the messages that Raashan speaks on really make them a very culturally important group.
When asked to describe their approach to Hiphop music and culture, and what they hope to contribute, they said some very interesting things. Part of their whole mission is to just simply make good music that is fun and uplifting, and something to dance to. On the other hand they are very concerned with the messages they project, and are hoping that the audience learns from them as well. Their lyrics: “We came to give you what you want, but kinda balance it with what you need” come to mind when I think of Crown City’s very effective and culturally relevant approach to teaching about Hiphop. Kat also chimed in and said that she trys to bring the feminine empowerment without overdoing it. Plain and simple, she is an incredible musician who has fun and does what she loves doing.
