  Oakland Block Party
  Culture | Expresh Media | April 2006

One of the greatest components of putting on shows are the people you meet. I first noticed Bob Nicholson because he was the tallest dude in the front row rockin a smile. I got to know dude through DJ Basta, and we've been meeting up and thinking big ever since. His newest project is the most positive and community-oriented I have witnessed in a long time. Bob purchased an old ambulance and although it doesn't run(he got it towed to the block party corner), it's packed with speakers, amps, and good ideas. We celebrated the van's opening day and Earth Day at the corner of Adeline and 47th st. in Emeryville CA. Friends, family, and the neighborhood stopped by to watch the live painting by Ides, listen to DJ Basta, and grab a veggie burger. The event started and ended with a trash clean-up, and Bob along with others were up at 5 AM serving free coffee.
__Cooling out by the van on a sunny Saturday listening to DJ Basta made me think of Kool Herc rockin parks and schoolyards in New York in the seventies. Herc didn't know that he would have an impact on popular culture or music, he just knew how to give the people a good time. Bob's van project and the people involved with it are making things happen in their neck of the woods, as well as making plans to come to your town and get down.
__To contact Bob about bringing the party to your area, email him at bnicholson@cca.edu and stay tuned to the expresh events calendar for upcoming shows.
